How could we not pick Taylor Koenen as Northstar Girls Hoops Player of the Week? Yes, that Taylor Koenen, the 6-foot-1-inch sophomore guard from Shakopee who drained a three-pointer from three paces beyond the time line to beat Chaska 60-59 in a Section 2AAAA semi-final on Saturday night.
“It felt good once it left my hand, and I was just hoping because I didn’t want the season to end,” Koenen said.
Earlier Taylor scored 13 points as Shakopee won its first section playoff game 72-46 over Burnsville. Her game-winner against Chaska accounted for her 23rd, 24th and 25th points of the night.
Chaska went 15-12 a year ago and lost its No. 2 scorer Hanna Zerr to graduation. The Sabres were widely expected to be about a .500 team this year, but Koenen told us early in the year that “we’re going to surprise some people this year.”
Well, she was right.
