Closer Glen Perkins and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a four-year contract that guarantees the pitcher $22,175,000. The team announced Friday that Perkins will earn $4.025 million this year, $4.65 in 2015, $6.3 million in 2016 and $6.5 million in 2017.
A source told KSTP Perkins initiated the talks to restructure his contract, saying the Minnesota native wants to finish his career with the team. The new deal contains a partial no-trade clause - the number of teams was not specified.
Perkins had been due $4,975,000 this year and $3.75 million in 2015 under his previous deal, which included a $4.5 million team option for 2016 with a $300,000 buyout. The new contract has a $6.5 million option for 2018 with a $700,000 buyout.
Perkins, 31, was 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 62.2 innings pitched last season. He converted 36 of his 40 save opportunities and was named to his first All-Star Game in 2013. The Stillwater High School graduate and former University of Minnesota Golden Gopher has a career record of 28-17 with a 3.89 ERA with 54 saves and 279 strikeouts in 276 games, all with the Twins.
