The anticipation building for those who follow high school basketball in Minnesota is over. The Mr. Basketball of Minnesota Committee has announced the winner of the coveted Mr. Basketball Award for 2014.
The award goes to Tyus Jones of Apple Valley.
Ken Lien, chairman of Minnesota's Mr. Basketball committee, made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. This is the 38th year for the award.
“We've seen these kids for three or four years and this particular class has had a lot of notoriety and press,” Lien said. “We are looking for the best basketball talent.”
Lien says Jones has played smart throughout his career. “What he was smart enough to do when he was an eighth-grader is he got the ball to the upper classmen. They all accepted him and knew he was good,” Lien said.
Jones plans to head out to Duke University to further his education and basketball there next year.
Only seniors were eligible for Mr. Basketball. Other Finalists were: Wheeler Baker of Osseo, Brian Goodwin of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, JP Macura from Lakeville North and Reid Travis of DeLaSalle.
