When Macy's closed in downtown St. Paul, Mayor Chris Coleman knew something had to change if the city was going to continue to grow. Friday, he unveiled plans to overhaul four spaces that would drastically change the look and feel of the city.
Those areas are 7 Corners Gateway, currently a parking lot across from the Xcel Energy Center, Macy's-Grace-Wabasha Court, Central Station and the Ramsey County Government Center West.
The spaces will soon be up for bid as St. Paul works to redevelop empty or abandoned sites within the city.
A task force was assigned to identify the areas that needed work the most.
The task force report, titled, "Prosper: Momentum is Building," suggests those old or unused sites should be turned into more offices, retail locations, hotels and redeveloped public spaces to draw more people and business to downtown St. Paul.
"We have to continue to push the vision," Coleman said. "We have to seize on the work we've done by continuing to make sure people understand there's still time to get in on the ground floor on some of these developments."
The first project up for bid is the development at 7 Corners. Developers will begin to make those bids within the next month.
