Phil Hughes' final spring training tuneup Friday did not go as well as he would have liked to. The Twins' scheduled No. 2 starter for this season gave up four runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings in a 4-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Hammond Stadium.
Hughes is scheduled to start the middle game in the season-opening series against the Chicago White Sox next week. He finished spring training with a 4.74 ERA in five appearances.
Boston took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Mike Carp hit a two out double to score Mike Napoli. Carp would later score on Xander Bogaert's RBI single.
The Red Sox got two more in the sixth. Napoli greeted Hughes with a leadoff homer, and Derrick Gibson had an RBI single to score Carp.
Boston starter Felix Doubront struck out seven and gave up seven hits and two walks in five innings as he frequently worked himself out of trouble.
Minnesota will play Boston again Saturday in the final game of the spring training season.
