Like all collections, it all started with one.
Karen Schmidt, 68, of Coon Rapids, Minn., really liked a snowman doll that someone gave her about 15 years ago. So she bought another, and another. Pretty soon family members brought more snowmen as gifts.
It didn't take long before Karen had hundreds scattered through her tidy suburban home. For the past few Christmas seasons Karen has received as many as seventy new and different snowman dolls, toys, salt and pepper shakers, towels, pictures and novelties.
Today, the collection has grown to a mind boggling 5,127 snowmen.
Even Karen isn't even sure why she keeps growing her collection.
"I don't know,” she said. “Because I wanted to get in the book I guess.”
The "book" is the Guinness Book of Records which until recently recorded the largest collection of snowmen belonged to a German man who has a mere 3,143 objects with the same cheerful theme.
A tour of Karen's home is an eye-popping event. Every room, every nook and cranny, is filled with her obsession.
But, she is a happy lady who is looking forward to getting her copy of the 2015 Guinness Book of records to see her name in print for the whole world to see.
And Karen doesn't plan on letting go of her beloved snowmen when the time comes for her to pass on her collection.
She has even selected a number of snowman containers for her ashes!
