Carl and Julie Gaede are from Wisconsin, but they live most of the year in Uganda. The two are trained as psychologists who work with victims of trauma caused by civil war violence in neighboring South Sudan.
Carl Gaede says their faith compelled them to use their training to help heal what they describe as invisible scars, "Where we are, we're literally surrounded by millions of traumatized people. It's overwhelming, on the one hand, and it's also confirmation that we're right where we're supposed to be."
The couple works directly with victims, and has trained a small staff to work with others. Carl Gaede says the work is rewarding, "We've been amazed to see real transformation in people's lives in a short period of time."
