A Rochester man has been arrested for assault and theft after allegedly attacking employees who believed he was stealing.

According to police, 20-year-old Carlos Antoine Smith and another person were seen taking several items from Macy's, located in the Burnsville Center, last Friday around 5 p.m.

When the pair was confronted by loss prevention employees, Smith and his accomplice attacked them, the criminal complaint said. Witnesses told investigators they saw Smith and the accomplice hitting the employees on the head.

The duo were taken into custody by Burnsville police, the complaint said. Merchandise worth $676.37 was recovered at the scene.

An investigation revealed Smith has a prior conviction for domestic assault, fifth-degree assault and simple robbery since 2012. He has been charged with felony assault and felony theft.

The second suspect was not identified.
