A man has been taken into custody after a police chase ended in a vehicle fire Saturday afternoon in Cottage Grove.
A witness called Cottage Grove police to report a man had driven over a curb and hit a rock near the 7100 block of 80th Street around 1 p.m. The caller believed the man could be drunk, police said.
The caller also told police the man's SUV had a flat tire, but was heading north on Highway 61, police said.
Officers caught up to the SUV near 70th Street. Police said the man was driving around 70 miles per hour and the SUV was losing rubber from the flat tire.
The man refused to pull over for police and turned onto Glen Road, going in the wrong direction. At that point, officers saw flames under the SUV.
The vehicle finally stopped and officers pulled the man from the car, police said. They determined he was drunk.
The man has been taken to the Cottage Grove Police Department and is expected to face felony charges of drunk driving and fleeing from police.
Officers were working on identifying the man Saturday afternoon because his wallet and ID had burned in the fire. Police said the man was not very cooperative.
