Zebra mussels have been discovered at Christmas Lake in Shorewood, according to the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD).
The invasive species were found at the public boat launch on Saturday and were attached to the zebra mussel sampler. Staff found additional zebra mussels on rocks underwater and along the shoreline at the launch site.
The zebra mussels were between two and six millimeters in size, indicating they were likely born this year, officials said.
MCWD and DNR staff examined the lake further and only found zebra mussels in the immediate vicinity of the public launch.
Both agencies are working with others to plan a rapid response in the hopes of preventing the spread lake wide.
