Maarja Anderson was one of those fortunate enough to land her first news job just up the freeway from her home town.

She grew up in Grantsburg, Wisconsin and joined the Eyewitness News team in November of 2012. She was excited to start her career in the Northland. “Growing up, I always looked forward to my family’s annual trips up the North Shore. Now that I call the Northland home, I get to explore everything the area and the people have to offer," Maarja said.

The journey from Grantsburg to the Twin Ports was not a straight one. Maarja headed southeast and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May of 2012. Her degree is in Journalism and Political Science.

During her college years she interned with several broadcast stations: WKOW-TV in Madison, K102 Radio in Minneapolis, and KSTP-TV in the Twin Cities.

“My first weekend interning at KSTP was a whirlwind, literally,” Maarja said. “I was sent out with a reporter and we ended up chasing a tornado across the metro. That first weekend introduced me to the fast pace of the news industry-- and I loved it!”

On campus, Maarja enjoyed organizing fundraisers for various community projects and volunteering at the local YWCA. She also found plenty of time to cheer on her beloved Badgers.

A proud cheesehead, Maarja enjoyed growing up in a small town and learned to hunt, fish and simply enjoy the outdoors. As the youngest of four, Maarja loves spending time with her family. When she's not working, Maarja enjoys exploring Duluth's many trails, rollerblading on the Lakewalk, and watching the big ships come in under the lift bridge. She's also busy planning a wedding!

Maarja’s reporting has taken her all over Northwestern, Wisconsin. In August of 2014 Maarja transitioned to a new morning schedule, becoming the anchor for Good Morning Northland. Although she misses reporting everyday, Maarja truly enjoys waking up with the Northland every morning. "The 2:30 am alarm definitely took some time to get used to, but it was nothing a good coffee maker couldn't fix!"
