The Lake Superior Zoo’s polar bear Berlin underwent surgery Saturday at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital in St. Paul.
Berlin was taken to the University hospital after exhibiting signs of illness at the Como Park Zoo where she has been living since the June floods in Duluth.
According to Lake Superior Zoo’s vet Dr. Louise Beyea, Berlin was acting lethargic and vomiting.
An endoscopy, x-ray and ultrasound were performed and were inclusive.
Exploratory surgery was performed which revealed a necrotic mass and evidence of prior bleeding in the abdomen.
Berlin is presently back at Como Park and is under observation.
Lake Superior Zoo’s Director of Zoo Operations, Peter Pruett, said all zoo staff were very concerned however he was confident Berlin was receiving the best possible care.
“We are in daily communication with Como and we have staff going down to be with her,” he said. “Obviously Berlin is a beloved member of our family and even more so after her heroic survival during the flood.
