The Silver Bay community is mourning the loss of a beloved citizen; Bernard Zupancich, of Zup's Stores, died suddenly this week.
According to the family, Zupancich passed away on November 8 after a stroke.
"It was one of those quick, fast, shocking kind of things," said Jim Zupancich, family member and manager of the Ely Zup's Store.
Bernie Zupancich and his son, Brian Zupancich, operated the Silver Bay store. Brian said his dad had been in charge of Silver Bay operations since 1964.
"He was the town legend. He was a town icon. He would put himself out for the good of the others," Brian Zupancich said.
Brian talked about his father bringing sacks of groceries to those in need, and when they refused, he said it wasn't an option to turn him down. Brian said his father was also an avid hunter, fisherman and sports fan.
A service has been set for November 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Silver Bay with visitation at 10 a.m. A lunch will be served at the Silver Bay Re-Union Hall afterward. Memorials are preferred. To sign the online register book, click here.
