The legend of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox is a story many Minnesotans know well. BOLD-choice (Battling Obstacles Living with Disabilities) Theatre Company gives the old legend a new spin in their production, TIMBER! The Story of Paul Bunyan.
BOLD-choice Theatre Company is part of the private nonprofit agency CHOICE, unlimited and introduces audiences to the talents of individuals with disabilities. Their original play follows Bunyan as he tries to navigate a world where he doesn't seem to fit. Amongst the dancing and singing, there is also a lesson to be learned.
"We really try to stick the point of not bullying other people, especially to the kids," cast member Rob Reedy said. "Because when they learn they can treat people with respect, it really goes a long way for other people."
TIMBER! joins the list of past BOLD-choice productions, including Beauty and the Beast and Romeo & Juliet. Reedy has been in four productions, and said he feels at home on the stage.
"It gives me an opportunity to go out there and do what I know I can," Reedy said. "I show people the real side of me they don't often get to see when I'm working or I'm out in the community doing my thing."
To prepare for their performance, the cast holds dress rehearsals at area schools. Tuesday afternoon, they performed at Laura MacArthur Elementary School.
"It's fun. It gives me more confidence in myself," cast member Tanya Karsiko said.
BOLD-choice Theatre's public performance is at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 30th at Marshall School. Tickets are available pre-sale or at the door for $7.
