Fire Destroys Store in Bemidji

Authorities in Bemidji are trying to contain a fire that destroyed a home improvement store in Bemidji.

The Bemidji Fire and Police Departments said they received the call of the blaze shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday morning. The fire was fully extinguished around 6:30 p.m.

Authorities said smoke poured through the roof of the Birchwood Color Center, located on the 3400 block of Bemidji Avenue North.

Two other businesses and an unoccupied apartment were damaged in the fire.

The fire department said Bemidji Avenue North was shut down to traffic from 29th Street Northwest to Inglewood Street Northwest for a time on Thursday afternoon.

The fire caused an estimated $410,000 in damage to the structure and contents. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Bemidji Fire Department, Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office and Bemidji Police Department.
