Emergency crews in Carlton County rescued a dog, which had broken through the ice in Barnum.
A woman called Thursday afternoon, saying her 3 year old, 100 pound German Shepher/Golden Retriever mix had broken through on Little Hanging Horn Lake.
Volunteers from the Barnum Fire Department with the assistance of the Carlton County Sheriff's Office responded to the call.
Upon arrival responders met with the dog's owner who indicated that the dog had broken through the ice more than 150 feet from shore.
A boat was brought from the shore and rescue ropes were secured to the boat.
A responder, wearing water & ice safety gear, rode in the watercraft that was tethered to shore, and retrieved the dog.
Once the dog was successfully brought into the boat, the boat was towed to the shore.
The dog was turned over to its owner and appeared to be in good condition.
The Carlton County Sheriff's Office would like to take this opportunity to remind people that no amount of ice is safe and can be unpredictably thin.
Please use caution and common sense before venturing onto any frozen waters.
