Conflicting Accounts on Iran's Drone Claim

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - There are conflicting accounts about what Iran is claiming was a U.S. drone that was said to be captured after it entered Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf.

The U.S. Navy says all of its unmanned aircraft in the region were "fully accounted for." But Iran has produced an image it says is a ScanEagle drone.

A Navy spokesman says some of the spy planes have been lost in the past but not recently. They're also operated by U.S. allies in the region.

In 2011, Iran claimed it brought down a CIA spy drone after it entered Iranian airspace from its eastern borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan. The drone, equipped with stealth technology, was captured almost intact. Washington asked for it back but Iran refused, and instead released photos of Iranian officials studying the aircraft.
