Around 125 Northshore Mining employees have been notified that they will be laid off in January.
Word came before Thanksgiving that owner Cliffs Natural Resources plans on idling two production lines in 2013. That means layoffs for about 125 people.
On Tuesday, Cliffs said that the notifications about the specific people affected were made last week. They are split fairly evenly between the plant and mine, although there is a larger percentage from the plant.
Also, they are bringing in representatives this week, from the state Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) to help workers with assistance.
The layoffs go into effect on January 5th, and are scheduled for the whole year.
