The Itasca County Sheriff’s Dept. responded to a call of an overdue snowmobiler on Saturday morning December 29th at 10 A.M.
The reporting party advised Sheriff’s Dispatch that her husband had went out snowmobiling by himself on Friday night, and she had not had contact with him since 9 P.M. that night.
Sheriff’s Deputies and Search and Rescue responded to the Bigfork area where the snowmobiler was from and staged for a search for the male party reported missing.
Just before noon, Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a call that a male party was found lying on the Bigfork River next to a snowmobile and was believed to be deceased.
Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Bigfork River in Liberty Township in Northern Itasca County.
Deputies confirmed that the male party found was that of the missing snowmobiler and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim is identified as 38 year old Daniel Hollinday from Bigfork.
The Investigation at the scene indicates that the snowmobile hit a large rock on the shore of the river and Hollinday was thrown from the snowmobile into some smaller rocks on the shoreline.
The Sheriff’s Dept. was assisted at the scene by Itasca County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Squad, Bigfork Ambulance Service and Bigfork Fire Dept.
