Twin Ports area kids are taking a cue from the big boys, playing ball with UMD's men's basketball team.

On Tuesday night, kids on the Salvation Army's Rookie Basketball Association Teams were getting a little practice on the hard court with the veteran Bulldogs of UMD.

The team has volunteered to partner up with the Salvation Army, working on everything from the importance of stretching to dribbling drills, and just learning the fun of the game.

But Coach Heather Senarghi said the presence of an older role model is important for the kids.

"It also shows them that there's more to this team. That you can go on to high school and college. It also shows them that good grades are really important as well," Senarghi said.

Senarghi said the UMD players will be coming back again on Wednesday.

Last year, almost 800 kids from the Twin Ports area participated in the Rookie Basketball Association. Two sessions are held during the school year, and week-long camps and tournaments are held in the summer.
