A resolution allowing for the future annexation of Midway Township passed at a Duluth City Council meeting Monday night by a vote of 8-1, with councilor Jay Fosle voting in the minority.
The vote doesn’t mean the annexation is happening yet. As Eyewitness News has reported, it creates a process and sets up a framework for how it could be done in the future.
Prior to the vote, Fosle said “my big concern is Duluth doesn't have the money to take care of itself right now - the streets or anything else - and we start annexing other entities?”
Fosle also raised concerns about providing fire, police and other emergency services to Midway Township. He said he thinks taxpayers there won't want to pay the taxes of the city of Duluth if the annexation happens.
Councilor Sharla Gardner said further action is likely still many months away.
