KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan authorities say one person is dead and dozens have been wounded in an attack by Taliban suicide bombers on the gates of the country's intelligence agency.

The blast shredded nearby cars, and shattered storefront windows three blocks away.

The brazen midday attack highlighted the determination of insurgents to continue fighting, even as President Hamid Karzai and the United States negotiate for a quicker pullout of U.S. forces

Police say a minivan drove into a gate of the intelligence agency compound in the capital, Kabul, at noon, and exploded in a blast that was heard throughout downtown. A second minivan pulled up, and police say five attackers wearing explosive vests jumped out and tried to storm the gate.

They say security forces killed the attackers and defused explosives that were found in the second van.

It's the second attack targeting the intelligence agency in the past six weeks. A suicide bomber set off his explosives while meeting with Afghanistan's intelligence chief in December. The intelligence official is hospitalized in the United States with serious wounds.

The Taliban are claiming responsibility for the latest assault.
