The rink is ready! Grand Rapids is home to Hockey Day Minnesota. Three high school games will be played on the rink on Lake Pokegama on Saturday.
The Grand Rapids Amateur Hockey Association made a bid to host this event more than two years ago. And now, all of their hard work is coming to a conclusion.
"We're hoping for a huge crowd. We'll have the games, of course, but we'll also have activities for the kids. I expect to see snowmobiling on the lake, and ice fishermen of course," Sholom Blake said. He's a co-chair on the committee this year.
He said they made a bid to host the event more than two years ago. "It's a locally run event. The Minnesota Wild and Fox Sports North also support us, of course. The city and community have really stepped up."
There will be there games, including Hibbing vs. Eagan, Benilde St. Margaret vs. Grand Rapids, and Grand Rapids vs. Hibbing (girls).
The rink has been worked on for the past week, and is in such good shape that some players who've already been out there said it feels like arena ice.
But it's the tradition of playing outside, the pond hockey aspect, that makes this so fun, according to Blake.
Tickets are available that day, Saturday. The rink is at the edge of the golf course.
