The Minnesota State Patrol said Caitlin D. Kelly, 19, of Northfield, MN, was killed Friday when her Honda Civic spun out and went sideways on Highway 61, hitting another vehicle traveling southbound.

According to the incident report, Paul Drindak, 62, of Thunder Bay, was driving the other vehicle, a Chevy Malibu. Drindak was uninjured and his passenger, Linda Drindak, 61, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Minnesota State Patrol Public Information Officer Curtis Mowers said troopers responded to the fatal crash at Mile Marker 33 around 3 p.m. That's near the Lafayette Tunnel, about seven miles east of Two Harbors.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation had initially closed a portion of Highway 61 west of the tunnel, but it has since reopened.

Mowers said troopers have responded to at least 39 property damage crashes, four crashes with injuries, and at least 24 incidents of cars driving off the road.
