The fate of Duluth’s Carter Hotel is up in the air.
City Attorney Gunnar Johnson told Eyewitness News the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs wants the city to enter into an agreement that would allow the structure to be demolished.
Johnson said during a Bureau visit, they found mold and fungus growing inside. But, he added that the State Historic Preservation Office said that demolition would have an adverse effect on the city’s historic district.
Johnson said the city council would need to approve any agreement before the building would be demolished.
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa purchased the Carter Hotel two years ago. They have proposed adding the property to their reservation.
