On Wednesday, over two dozen 6th graders from Hibbing were panning for cold. And mining for chocolate chips.

They are part of the "Engineering, Cool!" program. It's in its fourth year, and is designed to get kids engaged with science and technology before they even get to high school.

The Wednesday class was focused on mining. We met up with some of the students, who told us that they want to pursue careers in the engineering and science fields.

"I love it. I think it wil open doors for me in the future, for career choices, said Francie Kero.

"I want to become a scientist. Because you get to do all of these studies with chemicals, and learn how to stop diseases," said Nathaniel Milani.

Area engineers volunteer their time for the classes, which take place once a week for 13 weeks.

Sponsors support the learning. On Wednesday, the National Chapter of the SME gave the program $2500.
