PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - Just a few months ago, Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius of South Africa was being hailed worldwide for his accomplishments. Known as the Blade Runner because of his high-tech artificial legs, Pistorius became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympic Games.
Today, he was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Stennkamp, a model who spoke out against rape and abuse of women. She was shot four times in the predawn hours in his home in South Africa.
South African media outlets reported that Steenkamp may have been trying to surprise Pistorius for Valentine's Day and he might have mistaken her for an intruder breaking into his home. But police say those reports didn't come from them. They also say there have been recent problems involving Pistorius, including "allegations of a domestic nature."
Pistorius looked down as photographers snapped pictures as he left a police station accompanied by police.
A spokesman for the prosecution says Pistorius's court hearing has been postponed until Friday to give forensic investigators time to carry out their work.
