After a week of learning in the classroom, North Shore Community School students getting a more hands-on look at the Underground Railroad.
A dark gym was the stage of a re-enactment of the Underground Railroad for 5th and 6th grade students Thursday morning. It was full of activities to simulate how it helped free the slaves, and throughout the day, every student got a chance to participate.
The Physical Education Department put it on and said there is a takeaway message.
Alisha Franckowiak, a physical education specialist, said "be somebody in the world that is going to stand up for what is right no matter what is the very important connection that I want them to take from this and they do."
Students are involved in those activities every other year, experiencing them several times before finishing elementary school.
