Black Holes in Galaxies Rotate Fast, Study Finds

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A study is putting a new spin on supermassive black holes.

Using two space telescopes, an international team of scientists measured the rotation of a nearby gigantic black hole and found it's spinning close to the speed of light.

Astronomers have long suspected that supermassive black holes in the center of galaxies rotate faster and grow larger as they feed on gas, dust, stars and matter. But there hasn't been a reliable measurement of the spin rate of a black hole until now.

Scientists say it's hard to know how fast the giant black hole in our Milky Way is spinning because it's not as active as the one they observed.

The study was published in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.
