nullDuluth police have arrested a 33-year-old man they say attempted to steal a car.

According to Jim Hansen, the department's public information officer, police were called to the 100 block of East 1st Street Wednesday morning after a call of an attempted auto theft. He said initial investigation revealed that the victim's vehicle was rummaged through and was not able to be driven because of damage to the ignition area.

Hansen said a surveillance camera showed the male suspect entering the car in a parking lot the night before, and stayed inside for 20 minutes before leaving on foot.

A investigating officer recognized the suspect from past contact. The officer began attempting to locate the suspect, found him a short time later, and arrested him.

The man has been convicted on burglary, motor vehicle tampering, domestic assault, assault and drug paraphernalia possession between 2001 and 2012, Hansen said.

The man was transported to the St. Louis County Jail and is being held pending formal charges including felony attempted motor vehicle theft and misdemeanor motor vehicle tampering.
