BASRA, Iraq (AP) - Iraqi police and oil officials say protesters demanding jobs stormed the gates leading to a major oil field in southern Iraq. Security forces managed to restore order.
A police officer in the southern city of Basra said that about 150 protesters broke through the gates of the West-Qurna-2 oil field Monday morning and began smashing office furniture. He says the offices are part of an oil development project run by Samsung Engineering.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information to reporters.
Oil Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad says people who live near the field were demonstrating because they wanted jobs, and they began throwing stones at police. He says the breach did not affect work at the field.
