A former Itasca County Sheriff’s Office Deputy faces a felony charge after being accused of using his county-issued cell phone to try to capture video of a 17-year-old girl in a bathroom.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Aaron Edward Apitz, 45, Deer River, was charged Wednesday with interference with privacy against a minor under 18.  Apitz resigned Tuesday; he had been on administrative leave since an investigation began.

The teen said the incident happened at Apitz's residence on Feb. 25.  She said she discovered Apitz's phone in the bathroom apparently positioned to record video as she entered and exited the shower.  The teen said the phone was recording when she found it and that the video showed Apitz positioning the phone to capture the video.

According to the teen, she took the phone to a bedroom and was attempting to contact her mother and friends when Apitz confronted her and demanded she return the phone.  The BCA said the phone's memory had been wiped clean when its investigators obtained the phone.

The case will be prosecuted by the Cass Co. Attorney's Office.  The Itasca Co. Sheriff's Office assisted the BCA in the investigation.
