Kicking off a fundraising campaign Thursday morning, a Duluth organization serving the homeless and the hungry has a reason to celebrate.
Maurices and Minnesota Power donated $200,000 to the Damiano Center. The money will go toward expanding a soup kitchen and repairs to the roof and foundation.
According to Sandy Bennett, the food service manager, up to 400 people will arrive to eat for each meal. She said the kitchen and eating space has become too small. "They need to come in, have their meal and leave. What we would like to see with the new renovation is the ability for them to do more socializing, for them to meet their families here and have a safe place to sit and finish their meal and not rush," Bennett said.
The Damiano Center aims to raise about $2 million.
