A Superior woman was killed in a house fire this morning.
The fire on Billings Drive was reported just after 11 a.m. The Superior Fire Department says flames were coming out of the house when firefighters arrived, and fire and heat repeatedly thwarted efforts to search the home and attack the fire from the interior.
Battalion Chief Vern Johnson identified the victim as Jean Sweeney. A family member tells Eyewitness News Sweeney is a retired teacher and is in her mid 70's.
"It had a long time to get going and it was going for quite a while before we even got there," said Johnson. "This is a hard one. We don't like when we don't have a chance before we even get there."
Johnson said the fire appeared to have started in the basement of the two story home. The fire was mostly extinguished by mid-afternoon, but crews remain on the scene.
