The equipment really impressed the students from South Ridge Elementary. We're talking about big skidders and de-limbers, which are used in the logging industry.

The group of about 150 kids and their teachers spent time in Canyon at an active logging site.

Peter Wood, a logger from Canyon, spent time teaching the group about what goes into getting the trees out of the woods.

He sponsored this event, which also included a hot dog roast for lunch.

One of the teachers even got to try his hand at running a skidder, which drags out the logs.

Scott Dane, of the Associate Contract Loggers and Truckers Association, said that it's their goal to do outreach for young people. "There are opportunities out there, especially with the newer bio-energy on the horizon," he said.

The logging season is coming to a close, and will ramp up again in August, according to Wood.
