It's a sign of spring in one of Wisconsin's most scenic areas: The ice road between Bayfield and Madeline Island is closed and the U.S. Coast Guard will begin ice breaking operations next Wednesday to allow the ferry to resume service.

The ice road closed on March 27, according to the ice road hotline (715-747-5400), with a van or windsled in operation until the Coast Guard can clear enough ice to allow the ferry to start running again.  The windsled makes five runs per day on weekdays and three runs per day on weekends.

The Coast Guard said it will break ice in the South Channel, but not the North or West Channel.  It will not proceed north of Bayfield or the Madeline Island Ferry Dock.  The Coast Guard asked ice anglers to remove their shacks from the South Channel area.

Questions about ice breaking can be made by phone to Sault Vessel Traffic Service at 906-635-3232 or via email at SOOTFC@USCG.MIL.

The windsled/van schedule, which is subject to change without notice, was posted on the Ferry's Facebook page as follows:
