nullMinnesota alum Flip Saunders has turned down the head coaching job with the Gopher men's basketball team, according to ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

The Gophers are in need of a new leader after Tubby Smith was fired on Monday. Smith was the Minnesota head coach for the past six seasons. The Gophers lost to Florida in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Saunders, a current ESPN analyst, coached the Timberwolves from 1995-2005, followed by coaching stints with the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.

Minnesota also showed interest in coaches from Virginia Commonwealth University and Iowa State, both of whom have now signed new contracts with their current programs.
