The Fond du Lac neighborhood was hit extremely hard by the summer's massive flooding.
And with the spring thaw, Mission Creek could flood again. It has in the past during the spring.
But the city and residents are more concerned this year, because of the sediment that slid into the creek because of last summer's floods.
So crews were out on Thursday, clearing the ice so the water can move better. They tried to clear 1-2 feet of sediment, but it's still frozen, according to the Project Coordinator for the Engineering Department, Chris Kleist. "We may have to come back this spring and try again. But the water is moving better now."
The city has applied for funds to stabilize the banks of streams like Mission Creek.
"We worked with partners like the DNR to get this project done quickly," said Mayor Don Ness. "We heard the concerns of the residents. Usually these can take awhile to get approval. But not this time."
