A judge has appointed a former federal prosecutor to consider charges after an investigation in Cook County conducted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
The March 25 order from Judge Shaun R. Floerke was released Friday. The order appoints Thomas Heffelfinger to act in the place of the Cook County Attorney for purposes of reviewing the BCA investigation to determine whether a case should be prosecuted.
Heffelfinger declined to tell Eyewitness News what the investigation is about. A statement from the BCA said the investigation was conducted at the request of the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
Heffelfinger served as Minnesota's U.S. Attorney from 2001 to 2006 and currently works for the private law firm of Best & Flanagan in Minneapolis.
