LOS ANGELES (AP) — Could anybody keep a straight face around this guy? He first became known to TV audiences in the 1950s, but his gift for improvising and creating memorable characters would be enjoyed by generations of Americans.

Now, Jonathan Winters — the man with the cherubic face — has died at his California home at the age of 87.

Characters such as the dirty old lady Maude Frickert were based on people Winters knew growing up in Ohio.

Winters was introduced to millions of new fans in 1981 on "Mork and Mindy" -- playing the son of the goofball alien played by Robin Williams, who was perhaps the best known of the comedians who'd been influenced by Winters.
