Despite colder-than-average temperatures, one rite of spring still took place as planned Sunday: Duluth's annual smelt celebration.
Hundreds of attendees took part in the Run Smelt Run festivities, dressing up in crazy costumes of blue, black, and silver.
As part of Run Smelt Run, attendees gathered at the Lift Bridge and paraded along the Lakewalk to Zeitgeist Arts Café.
There, the celebration continued with a smelt fry and music by Brass Messengers.
Organizers say the event is intended to be an uplifting homage to spring and community.
