Wisconsin's Fishing Opener is this Saturday and if you're able to get out on the water, keep safety in mind and remember your life jackets.
"Everybody has to have a life jacket, for everyone on board and they come in a wide range of different sizes, shapes, colors and styles even. There are automatic inflating ones that are popular nowadays and they old standby works just great too, but making sure you have one on board for everyone and a throwable one with a rope is key for safety on the water," says fishing guide Jim Stroede.
This year's opener follows the coldest March on record. Many lakes north of State Highway 64 are mostly or completely covered. As for attempting to ice fish, Kevin Harter of the Wisconsin DNR says it is legal to do, but extreme caution would be advised and all rules regarding number of lines, size and possession limits would apply. Life jackets would also be recommended.
Plans are still on for 48th Governor's Opener at Lake Namekagon near Cable.
