MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The University of Minnesota is ready to impose a smoking ban at its Twin Cities campus.

The University Senate has voted in favor of the ban. The Senate includes faculty, students and staff. University President Eric Kaler says a tobacco-free campus has become an expectation, rather than an innovation.

Kaler would impose the ban, which could begin in 2014 after an educational campaign. The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/18PS6uM ) says more than 1,100 colleges and universities in Minnesota ban smoking on campus.

A survey by the university's Boynton Health Service found 67 percent of faculty and staff and 64 percent of students support a campus-wide ban on tobacco.
