A wildfire on the Red Lake Reservation in Beltrami County has grown to 4,900 acres, according to the Minnesota Incident Command System.

The Buffalo Ranch Fire is burning west of Lower Red Lake.  The size was estimated at 6,000 acres Tuesday morning but was reduced to 4,900 acres after a more precise aerial survey.

Gov. Mark Dayton has approved the deployment of a Blackhawk helicopter and a Chinook helicopter from the Minnesota National Guard to help fight the fire.  More than a dozen aircraft have been helping to fight the fire.

Jean Goad with the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center says the fire was threatening structures at one time, but they have been saved.

MNICS said an Incident Management Team has been sent to the fire to assume leadership on Wednesday morning.

A Red Flag Fire Warning is in effect for most of Minnesota, meaning the combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds are producing extreme fire conditions.  Goad said there were a half-dozen other smaller fires Tuesday, including a 30-acre fire near Menahga which was threatening structures.
