Gov. Scott Walker has declared a state of emergency in response to the Germann Road Fire in Bayfield and Douglas Counties.
The fire, the largest to strike northern Wisconsin in the last 33 years, destroyed 17 homes and burned more than 9,000 acres. "Tonette and I send our prayers and concern to the people who have lost property and those who have been evacuated because of this forest fire," Governor Walker said in a press release.
Walker's emergency declaration directs state agencies to assist the counties in the fire response and recovery and allows the Adjutant General to call Wisconsin National Guard troops to active duty to assist civil authorities. Walker thanked Minnesota, Michigan, Ontario, and the U.S. Forest Service for the assistance they've provided to numerous local and state agencies battling the fire.
Gov. Walker will tour the area and visit with first responders and local officials on Thursday.
