ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Republican businessman Mike McFadden says he's seeking his party's nod to challenge Democratic Sen. Al Franken in next year's election.

McFadden's campaign launch Wednesday came in a three-minute Web video that describes his Minnesota roots and concern "for the direction this country is headed." He's a first-time candidate and the first Republican to step up against Franken. He also filed formal paperwork to form a campaign fundraising committee.

McFadden is 48 and runs a financial management firm. He plans to take a leave of absence from Lizard Middle Market in Minneapolis during his campaign.

Franken intends to seek another six-year term after winning the last one by a whisker following a recount and court fight. He has amassed a healthy campaign treasury.
