Floodwood, Minn. - A first for Floodwood's baseball team and that's a berth into the Minnesota State Tournament.

An athletic banquet was held at the high school on Tuesday and the baseball team was recognized. The polar bears won the Section 7A Title last week, shutting out Carlton 3-nothing in Hermantown. The Bears have been close before, but now, a spot in the 'Great Eight at State' awaits and they hope to knock off New York Mills in the Class A Quarterfinals in Jordan. Floodwood is lead by five seniors. The team departs Wednesday morning.

"The biggest strength is probably our team chemistry. These guys get along really well and they pull for each other and are also very mentally tough and they handle adversity really well and I think any championship team, those are characteristics that they have to have and team unity and mental toughness is what gets us through," says Head Coach Adam Johnson.

"It helps that we have all been playing together for so long. Since we were little, we have been playing together on the same team and that definitely helps," says Senior OF Logan Maly.

"We have to do three things well. Make sure pitchers throw strikes, defense make routine plays and occasionally make a good play, a great play. As far as hitting, we need to focus on at-bats and be focused on every pitch and hopefully get a good pitch to hit and do something with it," says Senior SS Trevor Bernsdorf.

The Polar Bears battle the Eagles on Thursday at 5:30 pm.

Earlier on Thursday in Class AA, Hermantown and Kasson-Mantorville collide in St. Cloud at 12:30 pm.

FlThe Semifinals are Friday with Championships decided Monday at Target Field.
