GLEN ARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an 8-year-old boy who was canoeing with his father in northern Lake Michigan died after the vessel overturned in the chilly waters.
WDIV-TV (http://bit.ly/1cNJnLz ) says the Leelanau County sheriff's department reports the Ann Arbor boy and his 48-year-old father canoed Monday from D.H. Day Campground to North Manitou Island.
The department says they were returning when the canoe overturned half a mile from shore. It says the man made a cellphone call, and multiple agencies responded.
It says the boy was airlifted to Munson Hospital in Traverse City, where he died. It says the father went to Munson by ambulance. Both had hypothermia.
The campground is in Glen Arbor Township. North Manitou Island is about 10 miles north. Both are part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
