Yoga is a form of exercise that challenges your entire body. So imagine how difficult it would be to hold those poses while balancing on water.
"When you're standing, you feel like your whole body is engaged a little more," said Heather Holmes, a paddleboard yoga instructor. "It's more of a core workout. You just feel strong paddling."
Holmes teaches paddleboard yoga classes through Duluth SUP. She says this unique practice is for anyone who wants to test their yoga skills in a different way.
"It's not to replace or take over someone's typical yoga practice, it's just to get a new perspective," Holmes said. "It really challenges your balance, moreso even than just paddling around. You're doing the poses on the water. It's an excellent way to connect with the elements and be outside."
The classes appealed to Henrique Brandao, who had done some stand up paddleboarding in his native Brazil.
"Never really thought about doing anything else on the board besides paddling out. So yoga is very interesting," Brandao said.
But the waves and fluid surface of Lake Superior can be tough for even the most balanced individuals.
"It's quite a challenge," Brandao said. "I did some yoga on dry land but this is a lot harder. You've got to be a lot more careful with your balance and more aware of how you're standing."
This is Duluth SUP's first season in the Twin Ports. You can find them at end of Park Point, ready to share their passion for paddleboarding with the Northland.
"We are extremely accessible. You can literally pull up into the lot, park, get out on a board, go out," Holmes said. "It's 15 bucks an hour. That's as good as it gets."
Whether you want to pick up a paddle or practice your yoga poses, there is no better backdrop to try something new.
"I think people are really surprised at how quickly they catch on," Holmes said. "Your strokes may not be perfect and you may be a little wobbly, but anyone can do it."
