As UMD freshmen neared the first day of classes, campus organizations were out on Griggs Beach welcoming them.
Intervarsity Christian Fellowship was there bright and early Monday morning, serving free pancakes to new students. It was Meghan Safstrom's second year participating in this event. She said she's excited to meet freshmen and help them through this transition period.
"These first couple weeks are vital," she said. "The people that they're going to be meeting and becoming friends with are the people that they're going to be going through the next four years with. So that's why we're out here. We want to provide a welcoming environment where they can see a community that loves each other and really get a taste for what is available in college."
